Eunseon Park (Listen to the City)
A lot of words can be used to describe you with regard to your artistic practice: artist, activist, tour guide, publisher, curator. Do you embrace all these terms or is there one in particular with which you associate strongly?
All of them, I think. What Listen to the City is doing is working as an organization, as social designers and curators. We wanted to bridge the gaps between art and society and we ended up realizing that art and design can be really helpful to understand what’s going on in today’s world. But we we are against defining ourselves in one word. It might be easier for our participants or observers if we adopted a single sentence or term—for them to understand us—but really we are an organization for society and for artists. Listen to the City’s work and activities are a little confusing; we do a lot of things. I think that’s good.

POINT You are the director of the artist group Listen to the City and chief editor of Urban Drawings, an independent art and architecture magazine. What are you seeking as an artist-cum- chief editor?
Park Listen to the City is an artistic group making efforts to discover the new roles of artists. Modern art answers the question “What is art?” through art. The obsessive self-examination of ‘meta art’ has resulted in an alienation of artists from the external conditions of art through indi- vidual replies to questions concerning what the role of artists is. Listen to the City is a creative, critical community organized to contemplate the external conditions of art more freely. Artists have become more reliant on galleries, curators, and critics due to the advent of neo-liberalism in contemporary art.
